The Spread The Love Project

This is a picture of me (Julie Green) working at a place called Zeitgeist in New Orleans, LA in March 0f 2011. Zeitgeist is a co-op artist gallery and movie house. Zeitgeist brings community together and makes opportunities available to local creative folks in order to reenergize the low income urban neighborhood where it’s located. In this project, they bought the abandoned building in the next lot to convert it into a community bicycling center. With the help of United Saints and volunteers from a dozen universities around the US, in a week the dilapidated building was gutted, timber salvaged, lot cleared, and ready for new electrical work to be installed. The bicycle center will serve the youth from the neighborhood by helping them obtain bikes and teaching them how to do bicycle repair.  The volunteers learned new skills, made new friends, and earned a sense of accomplishment, plus earned some well deserved pride by being a part of such a vitalizing project.
